  • (1888PressRelease) December 18, 2008 - On a superficial level the definition of a good hotel lays in its luxury rooms, superb amenities, delicious food & of course panoramic views. However on 13th December 2008, the staff of Jamaica’s boutique Hotel Mockingbird Hill toasted their 15th anniversary of all of these ‘accepted’ hotel standards plus the extras that they believe have won them worldwide acclaim for their unique approach to what is a ‘good hotel’.

They celebrated the fact that their award winning ‘green’ hotel does NOT have an environmental footprint the size of Jamaica, and works to protect the environment above and beyond accepted compliancy - a fact recognised by their recent invitation to speak on the BBC World Service regarding environmental tourism within the Caribbean.

Hotel owners, Shireen Aga & Barbara Walker’s personal definition of a good hotel is one that is ‘sustainable and creates long-term collective wealth and learning within its local community by providing opportunities, training and empowering individuals’. An example of this can be seen in their relationship with local farmers, Joana and Vincent Slimforte to promote a range of organic goats cheeses (something quite rare in the Caribbean) for the hotel.

“A good hotel is only as good as its staff” is the icing on their anniversary cake for what they and the staff believe makes a ‘good hotel into an extraordinary one’. Shireen said:

“Without our staff we could never have got this far; we try to make our team members feel valued, content and most importantly confident enough to embrace & learn new skill sets. A lot of Hotel Mockingbird Hill’s guests arrive from highly-stressful work environments, we believe that if our customers are able to recognise these wonderful qualities in our staff, they will relax too knowing that they are in good hands for the entirety of their vacation in Jamaica and enjoy being taken care off. That is good for them and good for us in the long-term when they recommend a friend to holiday at Hotel Mockingbird Hill.”

This ‘special’ boutique hotel is more than just a ‘good’ hotel it is the icing on the cake as Head Chef, Anthony Reid explained

“To me, my workplace is like a school and not just any ordinary school but one that takes you to the highest level of learning and developing my skills so I must say, that it is a pleasure working at the hotel. I am grateful for this opportunity and thankful to be part of the family at Mockingbird Hill.”

Kashee Rodney, Assistant Manager elaborated on Anthony’s comments on:

“From a personal point of view working at Hotel Mockingbird Hill has motivated and inspired me as a young lady to strive and dream for what you want. I’ve learnt that disappointments may come but they will also pass and success is measured not just by what you actually achieve but by the amount of effort and perseverance it takes to achieve your goal and through this you actually develop yourself. Happy 15th Anniversary Hotel Mockingbird Hill well done to you all!”
