  • Akron, OH (1888PressRelease) March 27, 2012 - Chile is a beautiful winemaking country located along much of South America's west coast. The history of Chilean wine is rich with stories of intrigue, anarchy, and stealth exports of centuries gone by. Chile is now one of the top five wine producing nations in the world. The Spanish Conquistadors and missionaries brought grape vines to Chile in the 1500s making the Itata Valley one of the oldest wine growing regions in the Americas.

Common black grape was cultivated by the Jesuits to create wine for religious services. In the 1800s, Pais and Muscatel grapes followed the common black varietals planted centuries before. The phylloxera outbreak (late 1800s) that decimated French Vineyards left European vintners no choice but to export vines to the west (Chile), where they could grow free of the pesky aphid. French Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Malbec, Pinot Grigio and Merlot grew beautifully in the Chilean climate. Chile's insulation from the vineyard-destroying aphid allowed the country's wines to grow in terms of demand worldwide. French experts oversaw much commercial production and the country's fine wines were exported worldwide.
