The Bridge by Michael Glasgow is a multilayered murder mystery featuring an international cast starring a president, a secretary of state, congressmen, ambassadors, journalists and witnesses galore. Like the Natalee Hollaway case, the story of Eric Volz, a young man from Nashville accused of brutally murdering a young Nicaraguan woman, splashed across the national headlines. The response to the apparent injustice in the Eric Volz case has drawn reactions and interest far beyond Nashville. Unlike the Holloway case however, the Volz case had broader historical and culture issues that were reignited by the murder of Doris Jiminez. But at its heart, Eric Volz’s story is about the faith of one family and their relentless pursuit of justice on their son’s behalf, for a crime they know he did not commit.

Michael Glasgow, who practiced law in Nashville for twenty years, heard about Eric Volz through the massive media coverage. But unlike most people, Glasgow had a connection beyond their shared hometown. As a teen, he had spent a summer in Central America and memories of that time and the people remain vivid to him. Art from that region hangs in his home and as a parent he knows the fears and concerns that all parents have for their children as they make their own place in the world. As a lawyer and true crime writer, he was fascinated by the apparent personal and procedural injustice at the heart of the story.

Glasgow begins Eric’s story in Nashville recounting the forces and family that shaped his future. He follows Volz’s move to Nicaragua where he goes to pursue his dream of creating a bilingual magazine, El Puente—The Bridge—that explores the growth of Latin America and it’s economic and cultural intersection with America. In the small beach town of San Juan del Sur, Eric meets Doris Jimenez, a beautiful young entrepreneur who becomes his girlfriend. As Glasgow recounts Eric’s life there he uncovers the intersecting lives of another adventurous young American back in the mid 1800s and his influence on the people of Nicaragua, and his ties to the then richest man in America. It is this story which influenced the outcome of Eric’s case as Glasgow delves into the historical and culture issues that were reignited by Doris’s brutal murder.

The Bridge presents a tapestry of all these engrossing elements while relating the details of a mesmerizing criminal mystery that may never be fully resolved. It is a love story between a young man and his connection to Latin America culture, a love story between two young people from different cultures, and the ability of the human spirit to find strength and courage through a deep faith in a time of intense crisis.

Michael Glasgow is a native of Nashville, Tennessee. He received his B.A. degree from Vanderbilt University and a J.D. degree from the University of Tennessee. He was co-author of An Unfinished Canvas, published in 2007. He resides in the South and is currently working on his next true crime book.
