  • (1888PressRelease) July 23, 2008 - Stephen Unwin is an ActionCOACH based in Colchester, England and recently won two prestigious awards during ActionCOACH’s annual UK/European and African conference held recently in London. Stephen won an “Action Man” award as well as being recognised as “Most Improved Coach of the Year” at the awards ceremony.

Stephen has an interesting and diverse business background. After qualifying as a chartered surveyor, he spent 25 years working as a business owner, director and senior manager in fast moving sectors such as consumer goods, supply manufacturing, and professional services. From 1992 to 2000 he was the Managing Director of Copella, the UK brand leader in pressed apple juice, where he oversaw a period of rapid company and brand growth that led to the company being acquired by soft drinks giant Pepsico.

Stephen went on to run his own juice company, Cawston Vale and a property development business, but soon found himself searching for another challenge. He had always been interested in business coaching having completed a six-month course in Business Management at Cranfield University in 1996. Stephen saw ActionCOACH as the perfect opportunity to develop these skills and share his extensive knowledge and joined in October 2005.

“I had time to devote to something else and was looking for a business opportunity that involved interacting with others and helping them to succeed,” says Stephen. “I found that ActionCOACH was relevant to my experience and was a role that I could really enjoy.” Stephen’s clients come from the North Essex and South Suffolk areas and from a wide variety of business backgrounds - from engineering to leisure to landscape architecture.

Stephen says that his clients often suffer from problems with time, money and staff but that one of the most fundamental difficulties is that of trying to change their attitude from a hands-on approach to one that is more concerned with the growth and potential of a business. Stephen sees his role as an ActionCOACH as a long-term process for business owners and is still working with a number of his first clients.

“Success in business is all about putting knowledge into practice. The coaching process progressively builds skills and understanding but most importantly it changes how business owners think and gets them to take the necessary steps to reach their long term goals. If coaching didn’t results then I wouldn’t be a coach!”

Stephen sees his future as being firmly linked to ActionCOACH and enjoys the balance between coaching and his other business interests. Outside work, Stephen likes to spend time with his wife Tamara and two children, Jess 20 and George 18. He is also a sportsman and enjoys golf, skiing and tennis. Stephen believes that the most fundamental lesson business people can learn is that of a change of perspective.

“To really succeed you need to be prepared to change your mindset and take control of a business,” he says. “Too many business owners are letting their business run them when it should be the other way round.” ActionCOACH is the world’s number one business coaching firm, with more than 1,000 offices in 26 countries.
