  • (1888PressRelease) April 25, 2009 - Dr. Sean McCance was recently featured in the NY Daily News to bring attention to adult scoliosis. The co-director of orthopedic spine surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center highlights who’s at risk and how to treat the problem.

This condition is often missed because the curvature associated with scoliosis can be very small. Some studies show as much as 5% of the population has this health issue. Often times, scoliosis doesn’t affect people until they’re in their 40s or 50s.

“Due to arthritis, the joints become loose or relax, and the spine starts to collapse, leading to curvature of the spine and compression of the nerves,” comments McCance. “You can think of the spine as a column around a tube. If the column collapses, the nerves inside the tube get bent and compressed.”

Typically patients that are affected by scoliosis have back pain that is centered at or below the level of the curvature. Sometimes, this pain may even present itself as a shooting pain down the leg; causing tingling and weakness in the affected area. Other warning signs to look for can be more subtle. For example, a change in posture or feeling that clothes are fitting differently because of rotation in the rib.

McCance’s practice offers solutions for a variety of spine issues. The practice takes a unique approach to spine treatments; getting a complete understanding of the issue and creating custom solutions.
