  • (1888PressRelease) March 06, 2009 - The Skin Cancer Awareness Foundation will kick off the new “Shade Across America” program in May which is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. The incidence of skin cancer continues to rise in the United States. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, prevention works best when consistent, healthy habits are adopted early in life. One blistering sunburn during childhood will nearly double the lifetime risk of melanoma.

“The Skin Cancer Awareness Foundation is passionate in our effort to protect children from the dangers of the sun, which can lead to a diagnosis of skin cancer as early as in their teens, states William Barth, President/CEO. “My mission with the Shade Across America is to help schools and other recreational areas where children play in the US get one or more shade structures to protect them from harmful UV rays”, he adds.

May 4th through May 10th have been designated as Shade Across America Week by the Foundation. Businesses and communities can get involved with 1, 2 or 3 easy steps such as a silent auction item, donating a percentage of their products or services to the program or doing one fundraising event during the month of May. Businesses will benefit with a large audience exposure, inclusion on the Skin Cancer Awareness Foundation website, logo use with permission, inclusion in E-Newsletters and a variety of event exposure opportunities.

Nationwide Sun Safe events with the UV Man mascot appearing at shade structure ribbon cutting ceremonies and UV Protection education lectures will be held during Shade Across America Week May 4th -10th , 2009. “We want to involve all community role players including businesses, sports organizations, schools, parent and teacher organizations and everyone concerned with protecting our kids from UV danger,” states Barth.

The Shade Across America program is dedicated to supplying “UV Protection Packages” consisting of a 20’ x 30’ fabric Sun Smart Shade Structure and UV Warning Signal to recreation areas where children play. The Skin Cancer Awareness Foundation will award UV Protection packages based on qualified applications received during the year and total funds collected for this life saving cause.

The Skin Cancer Awareness Foundation has partnered with USA SHADE & Fabric Structures, Inc., the largest shade manufacturer in the United States to provide the shade structures. “We are excited to be on board with the Shade Across America program, states Basil Haymann, Chairman of USA SHADE. We share in the Skin Cancer Awareness Foundation’s vision and our focus and goal is to ensure that children have healthy communities and sun safe environments to play in. USA SHADE is committed to providing the consumer with a safe, cost-effective and quality product. Our unique mesh fabrics allow for cool air flow while blocking up to 96% of the sun’s harmful UV rays,” says Haymann.

“Parents, teachers and communities need to work together to help educate and protect our kids. It is our responsibility to protect our kids from danger, and so it is my objective to have shade structures over every playground and sports park in America. With this program, and the help of partners like USA SHADE & Fabric Structures, we will be able to cover our kids during the most important times of their lives, which is childhood,” concludes Barth.
