  • (1888PressRelease) December 21, 2010 - HolidayCity.com - The stunning landscape of Mount Aspiring National Park in New Zealand's South Island would once again be the backdrop to Challenge Wanaka, widely acknowledged as the most scenic iron distance triathlon in the world. Scheduled to be held on the 15th of January 2011, the event is often described as one of the more challenging routes where athletes would have to complete a circuit that test both their physical and mental capacity. With a good turnout expected from the local and international participants, Queenstown hotels are expected to be quite busy accommodating them.

The 226km triathlon circuit at Challenge Wanaka is hugely memorable due its stark terrain, remoteness and pure adrenalin-pumping obstacles that would test the limit of most athletes. Now in its fifth edition, the event is gaining in terms of popularity with over 1200 athletes participating, making it the largest entry ever. Gina Crawford, New Zealand's top triathlete, is expected to defend her title against strong competition from other competitors, such as Jonna Carritt, Jodie Scott and Rebekah Keat from Australia. In the men's field, observers and supporters can expect an exciting race with stiff competition from top triathletes such as Marc Pschebizin, Luke Dragstra, Petr Vabrousek and Jimmy Johnsen, who has won previously at the Challenge.

Lee Lai Huat, CEO of HolidayCity.com, said, "Challenge Wanaka is one of those rare athletic events that would push the athletes to the max with its combination of difficult terrain, unpredictable weather and breathtaking backdrop of lakes and mountains. The athletes would need all the strength and determination to take them through the 3.8km swim leg, the 180km bike leg and the 42.2km run leg right to the finishing line." He went on further to remark, "Aside from the triathlon, there are also other events that they can join such as the Lake Wanaka Half, Contact Cup Sprint Triathlon and the Puzzling World Junior Challenge Wanaka. These events would attract participants from New Zealand and other neighbouring countries, ensuring a healthy occupancy rate for Queenstown accommodation."
