Romania Animal Rescue Marks Nearly 150,000 Spay & Neuter Surgeries in Support of No More Strays

(1888PressRelease) January 30, 2026 - LIVERMORE, Calif. - For more than two decades, the hardworking team at Romania Animal Rescue (RAR) has directly helped address the issue of homeless animals in Romania. Now, the nonprofit is approaching a significant milestone: nearly 150,000 spayed or neutered dogs and cats. Using a prevention-focused program, this achievement presents a humane way to improve animal population control and reduce suffering, even as demand for emergency vet care continues to rise.

Founded to address Romania’s widespread stray animal crisis, RAR operates a multifaceted model. The primary location is the Center of Hope, the largest veterinary hospital in Romania. At 160 square meters (16,791.7 square feet), this launch point is only 30 minutes away from Bucharest. It offers a centralized base for two Spay Shuttles, a veterinarian mobile Spayathon van and an expansive mobile hospital caravan.

“Our spay and neuter work is critical to the animal population and a relatively foreign concept to much of the local population,” says President and CEO of Romania Animal Rescue Nancy Janes. “One of our goals is to help educate community members on the importance of this program to reduce homeless populations and improve the quality of life for both the animals, people and the environment.”

The Center of Hope ensures that RAR can handle complex and advanced veterinary procedures that are rarely available to stray animals. This may include orthopedic repairs, thoracic surgery, CT-assisted diagnostics, reconstructive procedures and critical trauma cases. In addition to the 10,000-13,000 spay and neuters they do annually, the program treats over 3,000 animals suffering from severe injuries, disease, starvation and neglect each year.

Beyond offering spay and neutering services, RAR is now a global training hub for a diverse and growing set of professionals. Through its Veterinary Training Camp, nearly 500 professionals from over 12 countries receive hands-on instruction. Best of all, these veterinarians experience what it means to work in a high-volume, high-quality prevention program, improving spay and neutering techniques that can be taken back to home countries and strengthen animal welfare beyond Romania’s borders.

The challenge now is to ensure proper funding as charitable giving becomes increasingly competitive. Romania Animal Rescue relies entirely on donor support to fund programs like the spay and neuter surgeries and animal welfare outreach. The nonprofit organization remains focused on its core mission of reducing abandonment, alleviating animal suffering and establishing lasting animal welfare standards in Romania.

A monthly donation of just $25 provides one spay or neuter. Since female dogs can have two litters of six to 10 puppies per year and then those dogs can all can have six to 10 puppies per year, a single spay has an incredible impact on reducing the stray population.

“Spay and neuter work isn’t as visible in the way of emergency care or fixing a broken leg might be,” continues Janes. “We know it is the single most powerful tool to prevent animal suffering before it begins. Every single surgery we perform represents animals who will never be born into hunger or neglect.”
