  • Lexington, KY (1888PressRelease) February 04, 2013 - Yesterday afternoon, HUD released their new radon mitigation and testing requirements for multifamily buildings. Effective June 4 of this year, all multifamily structures will require radon testing and in cases where the levels are above the limit; radon mitigation will be required. Members of the Safe Housing Coalition believe that this new legislation will save hundreds of thousands of lives over the next decade.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that between 18,000 and 23,000 deaths occur each year as a result of radon gas exposure. The HUD Healthy Homes Program, including the new radon testing requirement, will slowly reduce the number of families that are exposed to dangerous air within their own homes. Because the proposal passed, many households can breathe easier (including many low income families who normally wouldn't be able to afford radon mitigation systems.)

According to Jamey Gelina, a representative from SWAT Environmental Radon Mitigation, "We've been waiting for enforcement of radon testing protocols for a long time. HUD and EPA finally got it done. This is a proud day for our industry!" SWAT (which is acronym for Soil Water and Air Technologies) installed over 15,000 radon mitigation systems last year throughout the United States which earned them a spot on Inc. Magazine's list of fastest growing companies.

The HUD radon mitigation and testing policy takes effect on June 4, 2013. This gives the industry "time to prepare for the demand." Officials at yesterday's HUD conference believe that radon testing requirements will not only save lives, but will also create jobs in the environmental sector to support the increased demand for radon remediation and testing services. S.W.A.T. Franchising has developed a successful business model built around the radon industry. They are offering opportunities for entrepreneurs to partner with them and utilize their unique, proven technologies to launch successful radon testing and mitigation operations.

"We've got a long way to go, but with the right partners across the country, we can make every home a safe one," expressed Gelina. In addition to fixing radon problems in over 100,000 homes across the United States, SWAT Environmental has also mitigated schools, apartment complexes, court houses, and warehouses. They have even installed radon mitigation systems in some prestigious properties including Biltmore Estates, Wespoint Academy, Michigan Department of Transportation, and even Fort Knox!

In light of this announcement by HUD, there is going to be an incredible boom in the demand for radon testers and radon mitigation professionals. SWAT Environmental, in cooperation with William Angell of the Midwest Universities Radon Consortium will be offering professional radon training between now and the June implementation of HUD's radon program.
