Poimiroo & Partners is a virtual agency led by career travel and tourism marketing communications professional, John Poimiroo. John has directed PR and Marketing Communications programs at ski areas, attractions, national and state parks and destinations.

His first job in travel and tourism was as Director of Marketing and Public Relations at the Eldora Ski Area in Nederland, Colorado. He did the same at Squaw Valley USA in California, then held various PR and marketing positions at Marriott’s Great America. He was a Vice President at two major San Francisco PR agencies where he directed campaigns for national tourism, wine, spirits and food brands, was Vice President of Marketing at the Roaring Camp Railroads, and Vice President of Communications for the Yosemite Park and Curry Co. in Yosemite National Park, before being appointed by the Governor of California as Deputy Secretary for Tourism of the California Trade and Commerce Agency. During his years as California’s state tourism director, he conceived the California Tourism Marketing Act, established California’ first Welcome Centers, authored papers on ecotourism and was chair of the Western States Tourism Policy Council, testifying before Congress in support of public lands issues.

John opened Poimiroo & Partners in 1999. Its clientele include: The California Parks Companies, Yosemite Resorts, The Ansel Adams Gallery, Mono County Tourism and Film Commission, County of Inyo Tourism, Redding Convention & Visitors Bureau, California Park & Recreation Society, Folsom Tourism Bureau and Redwood Park Lodge Company (at Redwood National Park). He also serves as Travel Editor of California magazine, which is distributed in Europe, Oceania and Asia.
John Poimiroo has won numerous marketing, public relations, journalism and photography awards. Poimiroo is the only person to have won both the Society of American Travel Writer’s Western Chapter Photo Shootout Gold Prize and its Frank Riley Award for travel writing. Among his many other honors, John was a member of teams that won two national and state “Take Pride in America” awards and two national tourism industry “Odyssey” awards. In 1998, he was selected as the United States’ best State Tourism Director, was inducted to the California Tourism Hall of Fame and received the University of Colorado’s first Chancellor’s Tourism Award.
John is a member of the California Roundtable on Recreation, Parks and Tourism, the California Travel Industry Association, the Outdoor Writers Association of California, the Bay Area Travel Writers, is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America and is associate representative to the Western Chapter of the Society of American Travel Writers. He serves on the board of the Lassen Park Foundation,

He was past president of the California Travel Industry Association, a founder and chair of the Western States Tourism Policy Council, head of the California delegation to the White House Conference on Travel and Tourism, Vice Chair of the California Tourism Commission, a board member of the National Council of State Tourism Directors, a board member of Watchable Wildlife, Inc., a Commissioner of the California Sesquicentennial Commission and the sole tourism advisor to the Outdoor Recreation Plan for California.

John received a Bachelor’s degree in public relations from San Jose State University in 1969 and a Master’s degree in journalism, with honors, from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1973. He retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1996 at the rank of Captain (O-6), following 30 years service.
