  • Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) October 13, 2026 - A bold, multi-sensory theatrical work by Omonike Akinyemi blending flamenco, film, and surreal humor. Image Quilt Dance Theater announces an upcoming performance of Sketches from the Edge of Flamenco, a theatrical work written and directed by Omonike Akinyemi, two-time New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow and winner of the 2026 Shaping the Future Award through the Albany County Legislature. The production premiered in December 2025 in New York City and continues now on tour with its first performance in Los Angeles on October 24th, 2026 at Thymele Arts at 5481 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA, 90029.

Blending live performance, flamenco, theater, film, and surreal humor, Sketches from the Edge of Flamenco unfolds through a series of emotionally charged vignettes exploring identity, power, desire, and cultural dissonance. Flamenco is treated not as tradition alone, but as a volatile, contemporary language. Light Nigerian snacks(puff puff, jolof rice, etc…) are included in the ticket price for this intimate, cabaret-style experience.

    A film with Live Performance?
What happens when the actor gets to talk back to the screen and the dancer gets to jump into the crowd? Sketches features live, on-stage performances by Omonike Akinyemi and Angelica Mondol Viaña, both former performers with Ballet Hispanico of New York. Angelica has performed works by DIAVOLO, Elisa Monte and Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, Sydnie L. Mosley Dances, Spark Movement Collective, Emily Johnson/Catalyst, STREB and Brooklyn Ballet. Also bringing beats and rhythms that challenge the flamenco movement is Mounanou Badila, a skilled drummer who has performed with Diata Diata International Folkloric Theatre. In the role of the reclusive “neighbor”, dancer/actress, newcomer Tattiahna Welsh also joins the cast.

    What Are the Sketches About?
The 42 Admonitions of Ma'at– in a journey into the After Life, Circe, a former stockbroker negotiates with God for more life on the planet. She begins her visit back to her old self and visits friends at key moments of their lives. Rumba Oficina - Circe, a stressed-out but deeply optimistic stockbroker announces she has sold her shares, plunging her office into comedic chaos. Circe takes a trip to Spain and sees her ancestors trapped inside the walls of Granada. The Tangos - Friends gather at a café to do flamenco when a young woman recognizes her ex and does nothing. Circe collides into the young lady just before she decides to get “flamenco therapy.” I Feel Pretty Too, Bitch - When Circe purposefully delivers a box to the wrong address. A flamenco dancer discovers her prized dress was delivered to a neighbor, sparking a fierce meditation on beauty and identity.

Amerika!: A Lesson in Flamenco digs into the history of flamenco as a collision of identities under a purge of the Moors and the ICE patrol.

Las Cumadres Fechiceras - Inspired by a Sephardic folktale, a nanny in Medieval Spain contemplates abducting her employer’s baby.

Intergalactica - A surreal corporate scheme recruits participants to live “worry-free”… inside a bottle.
