There has been a growing trend of people growing their own lab-grown organs. The shortage of organs from deceased donors is well known. In the U.S. alone, about 18 people die every day waiting for a call informing them of availability of a suitable organ. There are over 80,000 people actively waiting for an organ at any one time in the U.S. alone.

    According to Chad Lieberman, other than the shortage, another reason why people should consider lab-grown organs is the fact that organ recipients today usually face chronic post-transplant health problem since they have to take anti-rejection medication.     This process is called organogenesis. The organogenesis process involves the use of a 3D printer, fat-derived stem cells, a "bio-ink" made up of proteins, and a bioreactor to incubate/cook the organ in preparation for transplant.

    Scientists are very excited about the prospect of growing bio-engineered organs. It takes approximately 28 days to grow a mouse lung and new discoveries are taking place every day in this field. This industry is also exploring the reconditioning of hearts, lungs, and other organs that would otherwise be unsuitable for transplanting. As an example, a heart crushed in a road accident can be "decullularized" and reused in the patient.

    There has also been increased interest in lab-grown meat. This has been informed by the increasing population and the reducing land mass available for animal rearing. There has also been pressure from vegetarians.

    According to Chad Ian Lieberman, "Projections show that in-vitro meat can use less than 99% less land, use 45% less energy, emit 96% fewer greenhouse gasses, require 96% less water compared to conventional meat."

    The first lab-grown burger cost £250,000 a few years ago to produce and most people who tasted it stated that it was underwhelming. One of the samplers described the "meat" taste as "neutral".
