  • Indianapolis, IN (1888PressRelease) August 01, 2009 - L.T. Pruitt Relief Carving of Shelbyville, Indiana, has launched a new line of relief carved cedar wood mantels and shelves for home builders and remodelers who want to preserve a piece of American tradition and culture or of their own family heritage in their home or office – what better way than to have it beautifully carved in the the rich, warm tones of a cedar mantel or shelf.

Raised in a photography business, Lee Pruitt began in 2002 to develop the Woodburytype photographic image process into a method of relief wood carving. Lee has since evolved into digital imaging and carving to create a standard line of carved wood mantels and shelves as well as offering an unlimited number of custom designs such a family portraits, mottos, favorite quotations or any combination of images and words that a customer would like to see carved in wood. These images, mainly of wildlife scenes, are then rendered in relief in beautiful Northern White Cedar. The standard mantels and shelves come in three sizes, 44”, 64” and 96”, but custom carvings can be done to any dimensions on logs up to 10’ in length.

“In a world of Made in China ‘wood’ products that are usually not even wood but made of resin, I wanted to do something that was real and that captured aspects of the American heritage or family traditions, made in America, one mantel or shelf at a time, and which brought into people’s homes a flavor of this country’s tradition or preserved something that was important to the family,” says Lee Pruitt. Operating in a 175 year old brick farmhouse, with all his equipment housed in a barn, Lee plans to expand the company’s range beyond mantels and shelves to include interior and exterior doors and cabinet facings with the same wood carving techniques and themes, almost all of which are his own and unavailable elsewhere.

“When you are carving wood you can use all the precision you want, but the wood is the wood, the knotholes are the knotholes and each piece that we carve is entirely unique,” he says. “I expect these mantels and shelves will become family heirlooms and will be appreciated for generations to come.” With this in mind perhaps, some of the favorite custom themes requested are family portraits, names and favorite quotes. The customer’s imagination is the only limit when it comes to custom designs. The beautifully-carved mantels provide an attractive centerpiece for new or remodeled homes, capturing the essence of America's heritage in a mantel or shelf which will last for generations.

    L. T. Pruitt Relief Carvings has a website, ltpruitt.com, where the work can be seen and orders can be placed. The company ships throughout the US.
