  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) July 01, 2008 - After attending the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery’s Annual Meeting in Washington DC this past week, New Jersey Bariatric Center’s Dr. Ajay Goyal recommends patients considering gastric bypass surgery review several studies presented at the meeting, particularly one from surgeons at McGill University whose data suggests that gastric bypass surgery can prevent the development of cancer in morbidly obese patients.

“The McGill University study provides additional evidence that patients receive multiple health benefits from gastric bypass surgery,” said Dr. Goyal. “In addition to weight loss resulting in improvements in patient’s type 2 diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea, we can now add a lower risk for cancer to the list of health benefits for patients.”

Many people see a dramatic weight loss after gastric bypass surgery. Researchers from McGill University in Montreal added to this with their finding that the people who underwent bariatric surgery saw reductions in their risk for cancer, particular in the risk for breast and colon cancer. The researchers tracked 1,035 such patients who had bariatric surgery for five years. They also monitored 5,746 patients who matched the surgery group in age, sex and weight but did not have this surgery.

“Obesity raises the risk for several types of cancer, including cancers of the breast, colon, esophagus and kidney, as well as numerous other diseases,” says Dr. Goyal. “Bariatric surgery – gastric bypass, Lap Band or REALIZE Band – can help patients take back control of not only their weight, but more importantly their overall health. It can put them on the path to a healthier lifestyle.”
