  • (1888PressRelease) March 07, 2007 - Cheerful Givers, a unique non-profit organization based in Eagan, Minnesota, has been placed in the literary spotlight with the release of a new book by New Heaven Publishing titled "Do I Have a Birthday Too?: The Cheerful Givers Story."

The book profiles the origins and growth of Cheerful Givers, a charity that provides toy-filled birthday gift bags to poverty-stricken children whose families cannot afford a birthday celebration for them. The book also outlines the inspirational biographies of the organization’s founders, Robin and Kevin Maynard, Cheerful Givers’ President Karen Kitchel, and Doug Fletcher, Chair of the Board of Directors. Fifty percent of "The Cheerful Givers Story"’s sale proceeds will benefit the organization.

Cheerful Givers is the only known nonprofit organization that celebrates the lives of poor and homeless children with anonymously donated birthday gift bags, which are distributed through a network of social service agencies, food banks and homeless shelters. The organization has been making a significant impact throughout local Minnesota communities, where it has distributed over 166,000 gift bags to underprivileged children since its founding in 1994. Although one in six children in the United States live at or below the poverty level, one of the greatest challenges for the organization is raising awareness of a cause that the general population largely takes for granted: a parent’s ability to afford a birthday celebration for their child.

Melane Bower, author of "The Cheerful Givers Story," took on the book project in the fall of 2006. “I first learned about Cheerful Givers through VolunteerMatch.org,” says Ms. Bower, who has donated copywriting services to the organization since January 2006. “Cheerful Givers is always looking for more nationwide publicity, and I knew that writing a book would be a very effective way to do it. The organization has a wonderful mission, and many, many children have had much happier birthdays because of the thousands of volunteers who have cared enough to get involved.”

To help kick off the book’s promotional activities, New Heaven Publishing will host the first "Cheerful Givers Story" web conference on Saturday, April 14, 2007. As the April 15-21 National Volunteer Week approaches, the conference will not only serve as a “virtual” book reading but a forum for participants to learn how they can assemble and distribute birthday gift bags for needy children in their own community. Ms. Bower will also be making a personal appearance at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota for a book signing on April 22, 2007.
