QuoteThe best of adventure that Ireland has to offer in 2012!Quote
  • (1888PressRelease) January 09, 2012 - 2012 is a great year to visit Ireland as there is currently a flourishing of interest in adventure sports in the country. Irish people have certainly reconnected with the beautiful landscape of Ireland since they have struggled with their economy in recent years. 'Stay-at-home' vacations are hugely popular and activity tourism providers have risen, throughout the country, to meet this demand. For foreign tourists coming to Ireland looking to tour Ireland this is a real bonus and a departure from the more staid tourism that had hitherto fore been on offer.

Listed below are my top 5 new adventure activities on offer in Ireland in 2012:

    1. Rock climbing in Dublin. Very few tourists realise it but it is now extremely easy to learn to rock climb in Dublin, or rather just a few minutes ride from Dublin, in the scenic village of Dalkey. Day courses run every week and provide an opportunity to pick up the basics of bouldering and rope climbing . It also has the advantage of providing extraordinary views out over Dublin bay. When you're done for the day you can saunter into Dalkey village for a meal or a drink and discuss your prowess on the crags (you might even bump in to Bono in his village).

    2. Surfing in Donegal. Donegal on the northwest coast of Ireland has long been 'outed' as a gem of a place to surf. The full gamut of styles from soul surfing to point breaks, to reef and beach surfing is there to be experienced right up and down the beautiful coast. Rossnowlagh beach, just south of Bundoran, is an exquisite corner of Europe and any time spent there is not wasted. However, on a summer evening there can be nothing better than picking up a slow rolling wave on a longboard and coasting in to a barbeque on the beach, lobster and crab claws are optional though strongly advised!

    3. Adventure racing in Mayo. Adventure racing is Ireland's best kept secret...'til now. The challenge of multi-disciplinary racing has really captured the Irish imagination and no tours of Ireland should really miss out on the chance to try one. The original and best is 'Gaelforce' and it takes place in Co. Mayo over the summer each year. Including bog running, kayaking, mountain biking, road running and mountain hiking this race will test your mettle both physically and mentally. If you do manage to finish though the sense of satisfaction, nay, elation is such that it may all seem worthwhile.

    4. Coasteering in Cork. Coasteering is another one of those new tranche of activities gaining momentum in recent years. The sport involves getting suited in wetsuit, flotation device and helmet before taking to explore a section of coastline on land and on water. The adventure lies in the extraordinary range of cliffs, caves, inlets and blow-holes on offer on the Irish coastline. In Co. Cork the Old Head of Kinsale area is noted for coasteering explorers and they can often be seen trying to outdo each other in feats of cliff diving, canyoning, swimming and general derring-do.

    5. Trail Biking in Limerick. Finally, we come to my own favourite which is the superb bike trails of Ballyhoura Mountains. This is the largest trail network of its kind on the island with 98km of trail in total graded from easy to difficult. They include forest road climbs, tight and twisty singletrack, raised boardwalk sections through the forest and technical rocky parts. All are great fun and allow you to earn your Guinness that evening!

Hopefully this small selection will whet your appetite for your next tour of Ireland.
