  • New Orleans, LA (1888PressRelease) July 30, 2009 - StoppingPoints.com, a guide targeting geographical data niches for deployment through local search technologies, launched a new section this week which pinpoints over four-hundred historical markers throughout the State of Louisiana.

The new guide documents more historical markers and historic sites than virtually any other online guide of LA. The intuitive interfaces enable easy access of markers in geographic groupings such as by parish, by towns, and by themes.

Bill Lawson, Editor in Chief for StoppingPoints, stated "We believe that the Louisiana state historical site guide is probably one of the most comprehensive guides to the Bayou State anywhere. There is no official state government guide to Louisiana's markers on the internet, and this state's historical contributions are some of the most compelling and interesting of anywhere in America!"

"Louisiana's historical markers highlight some of the most nostalgic places in the venerable old Deep South. The mixture of French, Creole, Civil War, and architectural history all contribute in making Louisiana a truly mythical place in the country's mass conscious."

Some of the small towns and villages in Louisiana sport relatively few markers, while more historically-significant areas such as Alexandria show a dozen or so of the small, white and brown "LA" marker symbols:

Some of the most interesting or well-known historical markers are to be found in New Orleans, such as for the Garden District, the Dufour-Baldwin House, and Lafayette Square.

In addition to the maps and increasing numbers of photographs, the site pages include features such as Microformats, allowing those with devices capable of reading hCard microformatting to easily export historical site addresses and phone numbers.

"Such features come in very handy for people who are planning trips to see historic sites," said Lawson. "We're combining multiple technologies such as microformats, special displays for mobile devices, and Google Maps to provide a feature-rich and easily navigable internet experience. We try to make complex information intuitive to access and use."

StoppingPoints will continue to expand upon the existing Louisiana historical data, particularly when upcoming tools allowing site visitors to add comments and share information are deployed. Other features expected to be released soon include special navigation pages listing Civil War-related historic markers, Creole history sites, historic Cemeteries, and literary and cultural sites important to the state's past.
