  • (1888PressRelease) January 18, 2012 - The London 2012 Olympic Games are predicted to bring one million visitors to the capital, all looking for a place to stay. Concerns are already mounting that landlords are viewing the Games as an opportunity to 'cash in', leaving visitors stuck without suitable accommodation. It has been reported many professional and amateur landlords are demanding prices well beyond the normal range. Worse still, many may not even have legal permission to accommodate paying guests in the first place.

It has recently been reported in the national press that some landlords are asking as much as up to six times the normal rent for a short stay during the Games. There have been the headline-grabbing examples of 'penthouse apartments' advertised for £100,000 a week - or more. And for those on a more everyday budget, prices for more standard accommodation are often still pegged far in excess of what they would normally pay in the summer season. Many apartments are still being advertised at thousands of pounds per week, and the matter has even been raised in the UK parliament. There are also concerns that not all Olympic landlords are actually 'bona fide'.

According to English law, landlords need certain permissions in place before letting out any property on a commercial basis. This means that some 'amateur' landlords hoping to let out their home for extra money during the Games may actually be breaking the law. Different councils are taking different approaches, which is certainly complicating the picture. Some are threatening to impose serious fines on those who ignore the rules; and yet others seem to be more accommodating. And without a London-wide strategy, the concern is that visitors may end up staying somewhere paying tenants aren't actually allowed.

"We have been a family business for some thirty years now, and all of our accommodation is professionally managed. We want our visitors to enjoy their stay without any unnecessary stress; the very last thing they should have to cope with is problems with their accommodation! We have completely self-contained apartments available within minutes of Hampstead Heath, one of the most prestigious and celebrated areas of London. It's a wonderful place to stay, part of the real, classic London experience, with a timeless atmosphere. With its cafes, restaurants and quality shops, it is very well appointed for travellers, and within 10-20 minutes of central London on a very frequent network of trains, tubes and buses. We'll be renting accommodation by the night, week or month to be as flexible as possible and of course, as usual doing everything possible to ensure our visitors stay is problem-free"
