  • Harrisburg-Lebanon-Carlisle, PA (1888PressRelease) May 05, 2010 - Starting Monday, May 3, Lebanon Transit ("LT," formerly COLT) will be offering commuters free rides to Harrisburg to mark the launch of the Commute King Express route. The new service will provide direct morning and afternoon service on weekdays, with limited stops in Lebanon County and at specific stops in the state capital. The free rides will continue through May 14 and are intended to spread the word about the Commute King Express, which offers an alternative to the stresses of commuting including rising fuel costs, severe weather, traffic and construction delays and wear and tear on vehicles.

"Using Lebanon Transit is always a smart choice-economically and environmentally," states LT Executive Director Theresa Giurintano. "By introducing this new commuter option we aim to attract those who are not yet using our service by offering a solution that truly meets their needs. Commuters to Harrisburg can avoid the hassles of driving on their own while saving money, reducing vehicle emissions and traffic congestion and getting work done along the way."

To enable passengers to be more productive while commuting, LT is offering wireless Internet service for its commuters.

For the first few weeks the service will involve a mix of transit buses, but in a few months will be upgraded to the luxury bus line, with some models featuring footrests, luggage racks, reclining seats and other amenities. A few of the Harrisburg stops include the Amtrak rail station, the Capitol building, PennDot offices and HACC - Harrisburg Campus.

According to LT's Assistant Executive Director Jon Ellsworth, this is the first time the agency has run buses to Harrisburg. A second express route to Harrisburg-via Route 81-will be added in several months, after construction of a park-and-ride facility near Fort Indiantown Gap is completed.

Another important factor in the new service is the significant savings it provides its riders. Lebanon Transit's Express Service to Harrisburg costs $1.80 each way (70 cents with student ID), and monthly passes are available at just $65, allowing unlimited trips on any LT route and bus. This amounts to a potential savings of $279 in commuting costs.

Name Change Coincides with Launch of Express Service
The new Commute King Express comes as Lebanon Transit officially makes the transition from its former moniker, COLT, to LT. The rebranding comes as a result of a 2008 transportation study finding that there was a lack of the public transit agency awareness among county residents.
