  • (1888PressRelease) September 26, 2012 - HONG KONG - Back for a second consecutive year as the league's official sponsor is Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), which continues to support the four-team league as well as the successful Adopt-a-School program that provides opportunities for students to get involved with ice hockey and the CIHL. RBC will also be an important part of the new RBC CIHL Intern Program.

    The 2012-2013 season of Hong Kong's first contact hockey league will begin on Saturday, October 6 at Mega Ice in Kowloon Bay with a double header involving the Quam Hong Kong Typhoons, the South China Sharks, the Macau Aces and the defending CHIL champions, the AsiaXPAT Kowloon Warriors.

    The CIHL's 15-week regular season runs from October through February, and is capped by a best-of-three game semi-finals series and a winner-takes-all final game in March, 2013. The puck drops for the first game at 8:00 p.m., with the second game scheduled at 9:30 p.m.

    "Following our successful debut season last year, the CIHL is delighted to return for what we expect to be an even more entertaining and competitive season," CIHL co-founder Gregory Smyth said. "We have introduced several new elements, ranging from the establishment of our intern program to the solidification of our partnerships with youth hockey club, the Hong Kong Typhoons. This will no doubt further the development of the sport and continue our commitment of raising the bar for hockey in the region."

    New this season is the CIHL Intern Program, which features former Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) players joining CIHL teams, while developing their professional skills through internships at prestigious Hong Kong firms and coaching youth hockey.

    With over 1,000 players of all levels in Hong Kong, the CIHL is continuing its commitment to developing the sport with a stronger partnership with the Hong Kong Typhoons and the U18 and U14 programs.

    RBC has again committed to sponsoring tickets for the RBC Adopt-a-School program, which invites students of all ages to take part in CIHL games and learn about the values of sport and sportsmanship.

    All games will be played at Mega Ice, with a game format of three, 12-minute periods of five-on-five hockey.
