  • (1888PressRelease) December 30, 2009 - The Great Ocean Road now has a bible to accompany environmentally-conscious travellers as they explore the South-West Australian terrain. Entitled "The Complete Guide To The Great Ocean Road", the book packed full of tips, notes and ways to enjoy the region without destroying it in the process.

Written by former Lonely Planet author, Richard Everist, the book's cover is graced by The Twelve Apostles from front to back: a spectacular image captured on film of the sight synonymous with the Great Ocean Road.

The book focuses on ecological issues as much as it does the rich array of tourism experiences available along the Great Ocean Road. There are also special tips for visitors to help ensure that the Great Ocean Road and its many attractions are there for future generations.

"Bring your own bottled water and minimise the amount of water and plastic bottles that you buy. In most parts of the Great Ocean Road region, the water is excellent - and it is always safe", is one such tip.

There is also plenty of other information to ensure that even first-time travellers are armed with a wealth of inside knowledge, even down to how to avoid traffic jams when leaving Melbourne.

Geelong Otway Tourism's Deputy CEO Terry Hickey sums it up.

"This is the best book ever written about the Great Ocean Road. It's getting rave reviews."

"And it is really important to us that right throughout this publication we have these messages about treading lightly on the road from an ecological point of view.

"We want the Great Ocean Road to be around as a place of great beauty for many years to come."

Hickey says Geelong Otway Tourism is committed to being a leader in sustainable tourism.

"Geelong Otway Tourism was the first regional tourism body in Australia to be accredited by Green Globe 21," says Hickey.

"For three years we have had a bronze ranking with Green Globe 21 and we are now being assessed for silver.

"We have partnered with EC3 GLOBAL to deliver sustainable pathway initiatives for the whole of the Great Ocean Road region.

"We are also currently in partnership with Victoria University for a world's first look at tourism initiatives for dealing with adaptive strategies for climate change."

The Complete Guide to the Great Ocean Road is published by Best Shot! and Trailblazer Publications and costs AUD$49.95.
