Top Quote As the chances of developing glaucoma increase considerably as we age, seniors and baby boomers should become familiar with glaucoma risk factors that might apply to their individual eye and health history according to advice from Ophthalmologist Scott Buck, M.D. of Northwest Indian Eye & Laser Center. Then, once patients reach 60 years old-even without any family or medical history-patients glaucoma risk increases 6 fold. A family history-especially a brother or a sister with glaucoma increases your risk by 4-9 times compared to the average population," shared Dr. Scott Buck. "A shocking reality is that among African-Americans, glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness. We also have seen recent research that suggests that long term use of birth control pills as well as an early onset of natural menopause can significantly increase glaucoma risk among women. Those patients who have obstructive sleep apnea should absolutely be carefully evaluated as sleep apnea seems to predispose patients to the risk of developing glaucoma as well," noted Dr. Buck.

Prevent Blindness America has designated January as National Glaucoma Awareness Month. In order for seniors and baby boomers-as well as our community in total to prevent vision loss from glaucoma, it is important for patients to become familiar with their individual risk factors and be diligent about routine eye exams with glaucoma evaluation and testing as recommended by your eye doctor
