  • Atlanta, GA (1888PressRelease) March 04, 2009 - The 1997 qualifying lap of 197.478 MPH set by NASCAR veteran, Geoffrey Bodine, still stands. Twelve years after setting that record the 59 year old Bodine will return to the Atlanta Motor Speedway to qualify his Larry Gunsleman prepared Toyota Camry in “old school” fashion at this week’s Kobalt Tools 500.

The economic turmoil felt worldwide has quite possibly “opened” some doors for a hand full of Sprint Cup teams hoping to get a foot hold in the big leagues of auto racing. The expectation of short fields has stirred activity among the most creative of racing entrepreneurs. One of those teams looking for a shot in NASCAR’s elite series is lead by veteran car owner, Larry Gunselman. Gunselman has teamed up with the brothers Todd and Geoffrey Bodine who share the driving honors to field entries in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Unlike many of the multi-million-dollar sponsored teams competing in this series, the Gunselman Motorsports Team is doing it the old fashion way. They are working with a handful of dedicated team members on a budget that is a mere fraction of most teams competing in this series. The team had a respectable finish in last weeks Las Vegas race while nursing a sick engine along the way. “I feel like we have good a set up for qualifying this week,” said Geoff Bodine. “With Todd’s performance last week we’re confident we can be competitive. I’m looking forward to wheeling the #64 Gunselman Motorsports Toyota Camry in this week’s race in Atlanta. I have the qualifying speed record there and a lot of good memories. I’m excited about our possibilities.”

Anyone seeking exposure in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series might seriously consider this team going into Atlanta. Much of how this season is shaping up with the emergence of these low-budget teams has the flavor of the “good ‘ol days” when guys raced for the love of the sport. It’s like the early days of NASCAR when the Independents battled with the factory teams.
