The patients died after developing serious infections shortly after beginning therapy.

Last week the Food and Drug Administration ordered that the manufacturers submit stronger warning for these drugs. The FDA has advised that the manufacturer's that they must warn users of the risk of developing potentially fatal fungal infections. In its announcement the agency reported that 240 users of the drugs had contracted a fungal infection called histoplasmosis. 45 of the reported cases resulted in death.
