  • (1888PressRelease) November 11, 2009 - Denver, Colorado - Dietary factors have repeatedly been found to influence the rates of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Macular degeneration is an eye disorder which affects the central part of your eye's retina, making it difficult, if not impossible to discern fine details of visual acuity. This typically affects people over the age of 50. Age-related macular degeneration is fast becoming a major cause of blindness in those over the age of 65.

A new study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition looked at the association with dietary glycemic index and the prevalence of macular degeneration. This study looked at over 3500 individuals who were examined and followed for 10 years. Over this period of time, 208 of the subjects developed early macular degeneration. These scientists adjusted findings for other risk factors for this disease and found a diet high in high-glycemic index foods was associated with increased 10-year risk of this blinding disease. Foods consumed which were associated with a lower-glycemic index, such as whole grain foods, reduced this risk. They found no relation with advanced macular degeneration. This study suggests that a diet high in low-glycemic index foods may protect against this disease.

Standard risk factors for this disease include age (10% of people 66 to 74 will have findings of AMD and 30% of those 75 to 85 will have these findings), family history of AMD, genetic predisposition, Drusen (a deposit found in the back of the eye on ocular examination), hypertension, vascular disease, obesity, high-fat intake, oxidative stress, race (Caucasians have a higher incidence), sunlight exposure and smoking.
