Strater was elected as a national delegate at the Texas Democratic Party convention in June. He is a pledged delegate for Senator Hillary Clinton representing Texas Senate District 16 including the cities of Dallas, Garland, Richardson, Mesquite, University Park and Highland Park. Strater participated in the “Texas Two Step” presidential primary and his election as a national delegate began at his neighborhood caucus and included three steps. He was among his precinct’s delegates to the 16th Senatorial Convention and then elected at the senatorial convention as a delegate to the Texas Democratic Party Convention. Strater then ran against seven members of his state convention delegation for the national delegate spot.

Strater is a resident of Dallas and is involved in neighborhood and community issues as a member of the City of Dallas Planning and Zoning Commission. For the City of Dallas, he has also been involved as a council appointee to the Permit and License Appeals Board, Urban Rehabilitation Standards Board and the City of Dallas 2003 Bond Program Steering Committee.

For over a decade, Strater has been an active member of the Dallas County Democratic Party. In 1996, he founded the Park Cities/Central Dallas Democrats which has grown to be a powerful voice in the Dallas Democratic community. He was elected as the Democratic Party Nominee for Dallas County Clerk in 1998. Strater led efforts beginning in 2000 through 2004 to raise much needed funds for the Dallas County Democratic party by serving as the party's fundraising committee chairperson. In this role, he started the party's Annual Fish Fry Dinner and chaired functions such as the party's Filing Night Fundraiser. The fundraising committee was critical as the Dallas County Democratic Party began taking back county wide and judicial elected positions beginning in 2002.

Since the mid 1990's, Strater has been involved in a variety of community projects involving the arts, LGBT issues, children and the disabled. His experience includes leadership and volunteer roles with Human Rights Campaign DFW Steering Committee, Richardson Development Center for Children, Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance and the arts fundraising organization The 500 Inc.

Strater is responsible for managing business development and marketing activities for the Dallas office of a global law firm. He was previously employed in marketing roles at Deloitte, Arthur Andersen and Citizens Communications. His past experience also includes work at Southern Methodist University as the Coordinator of the SMU Student Foundation and as a staff member for the Dallas County Democratic Party. In addition to his work for the Democratic Party candidates, Strater has also managed and coordinated campaigns for non partisan municipal candidates. Strater completed his undergraduate degree from Southern Illinois University and his master’s degree from Kansas State University.
