  • (1888PressRelease) September 11, 2013 - Forest Row, East Sussex -- Wordtrans, a translation services company established for over twenty years, predicts that collector interest in the newly translated Welsh Sherlock Holmes story will soar in the coming weeks.

A Welsh Sherlock Holmes society, the Deerstalkers of Welshpool, has recently translated one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's cherished short stories, "The Speckled Band", into Welsh. The Welsh title, "Y Clych Brith" is expected to generate significant collector interest, even amongst those collectors who do not speak or read Welsh.

A Wordtrans company spokesperson commented: "Translated copies of famous stories are often collected even if the collector can't read the language the text is written in. It's part of the fun of collecting to have several versions of the same story."

Mr Upton-Holder, who was involved in the "Y Clych Brith" translation, confirmed this position: "They're collectors. It doesn't matter that they can't read the book in Welsh. I collect the books too and I have copies in Polish, Spanish and Danish." He also dismissed any doubts over the books' attractiveness to buyers: "There are 400 Sherlock Holmes societies worldwide so we don't think selling the books will be a problem." The book was immediately requested by the president of the Sherlock Holmes Society in London and Mr Upton-Holder also detailed interest his own society had received from as far afield as the United States.

An original print run of 100 copies was made and this cost the Deerstalkers of Welshpool a tidy sum of £1,400. The group is now seeking funding from the Welsh government to translate copies of "The Hound of Baskervilles" or "A Study in Scarlet".

It is expected that several copies of the book will be picked up by book dealers, and as such will work their way onto online auction sites, book fair tables and rare book marketplaces as soon as the existing copies are sold out. Interest in the Sherlock Holmes stories has resurged in recent years thanks to the BBC Wales production, "Sherlock", and the two cinema adaptations produced by Guy Ritchie.
