  • Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) March 19, 2010 - On Saturday March 13, 2010, Chef/Owner/Operator of Cheryl's Southern Style Restaurant & Catering, Cheryl Stevens was awarded the 2010 Madam C.J. Walker Award by the PA Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. The Annual Madam C.J. Walker Award is given to recognize outstanding African American women entrepreneurs. The event was held at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel during a luncheon attended by many prestigious individuals including Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, state Sen. LeAnna M. Washington, state Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams, state Rep. Kenyatta Johnson, state Rep. Ronald G. Waters, Councilwoman and Majority Whip Marian B. Tasco, and Councilwoman-at-Large Blondell Reynolds-Brown. Additional awards included Triple Crown Scholarships which were given to three females for continuing their education.

    Serving the Greater Philadelphia Area and calling the city of Chester it's home since May 2003, Cheryl's Southern Style has been offering a variety of down-home dishes, soul food sides and homemade desserts, all created by Cheryl from her Southern family recipes. Cheryl offers up her food with a dash of Christian ministry by playing gospel music for her visitors or showing videos of local and global ministers. This is seen as an opportunity to uplift and encourage individuals. Her mission statement for her business is "Educate, Empower to Release Leaders." So, in addition to employing two young women on a part-time basis and teaching them all she has learned about the business side of operating a restaurant in addition to the cooking aspect, she has offered to mentor students enrolled in the culinary department of the local high school and frequently counsels young women in the neighborhood seeking guidance from an adult woman.

    Since moving to a new location at 28 E. 4th Street, just across from Chester City Hall, Cheryl's is able to offer dine-in as well as take out. For those planning for a larger group, we offer food trays for pick-up or full service catering at the location of your choice.
