Leading Canadian Public School Teacher Michael Ernest Sweet wins 2009 NCTE High School Teacher of Excellence Award for founding the Learning for a Cause Student Press Initiative in Montreal, Quebec. End Quote

(1888PressRelease) November 19, 2009 - Michael Ernest Sweet, one of Canada's leading classroom educators, has won a 2009 National Council of English Teachers High School Teacher of Excellence Award. Sweet is being honored for his founding of the Learning for a Cause Student Press Initiative which uses print-on-demand technology to allow students to publish real books from the classroom.

This prestigious award is given to 23 people in 2009 from across North America and will be awarded in Philadelphia at a luncheon with author Joyce Carol Oates.

The Learning for a Cause Student Press has published four award-winning anthologies of student writing in as many years and shows no signs of slowing down. Last year's anthology – Raising Humanity – features a foreword and glowing endorsement from Hollywood's Martin Sheen.

Michael Sweet was also recently honored in his own country with Canada's top award for teaching the Prime Minister's Award. This award is only given to 15 teachers at the National Level in any given year. In 2008, he was appointed to the Canadian Commission for UNESCO and honored on the Wall of Fame at the National Teacher's Hall of Fame. In 2010 both Canada's Who's Who and Marquis Who's Who in the World will profile Michael Sweet as a pioneer in education.
