  • (1888PressRelease) March 03, 2016 - Foreigners employed in the kingdom under a Thailand work permit are required by Thai law to file a return, the same as their Thai colleagues are.

Taxpayers can file a return with the Revenue Department within the last day of March following the tax year of January 1 to December 31.

"Individuals can of course file their returns by themselves, but for those who want to have a professional accounting company or lawyer take care of this for them, BSA Law offers this service," said BSA Law spokesman Apisakdi Kongkangwanchoke. "We find that many prefer to rely on the expertise and experience of companies like ourselves."

The Revenue Department's website classifies taxpayers into 'resident' and 'non-resident'. A 'resident' means any individual residing in Thailand for a period or periods aggregating more than 180 days in any tax (calendar) year. The website states:

A resident of Thailand is liable to pay tax on income from sources in Thailand as well as on the portion of income from foreign sources that is brought into Thailand. A non-resident is, however, subject to tax only on income from sources in Thailand.

Where-ever in the world, the filing of income taxes is far from the most popular of annual requirements taxpayers must fulfil. Commonly considered to be a confusing and daunting exercise even in one's own country, this is possibly seen as more so by expatriates working abroad in foreign countries.
