  • (1888PressRelease) August 04, 2009 - This call was made at a breakfast event during the recently concluded Nto Annang Foundation (NAF) Convention near Washington DC in the USA. The three leading Annang People Organizations in USA are in support of the World Congress Event.

Also at the event was Senator Ibok Essien who is a staunch member of Afe Annang. The Lagos Chapter of Annang Progressive Forum and Annang Heritage Foundation forwarded memoranda on the modalities for such an event. Also, in DC, was Honorable Abom Tony Esu who is a leader of Council of Annang Patriots. ADC plans to work with these, and several other Annang Organizations in Nigeria and Abroad including Ati Annang, to plan the Annang World Congress Event.

ADC used the breakfast event to showcase an example of the process and output of their Think Tank process by presenting a well researched justification for New States based on the historical Provinces. Out of the current 36 States in Nigeria at least 30 of them were provinces just like Annang Province, Uyo Province, Calabar Province, Degema Province, Port Harcourt Province, Ogoja Province but these have been denied statehood. The common thread being that these provinces are parts of Niger Delta.

Restructuring Nigeria for true federalism and ensuring that all of these Niger Delta former provinces, that have been denied statehood, are awarded the status of states, will help to address the long history of neglect and exploitation in the region by bringing accountability and development to the people as was the case before and just after the 1960 Independence from the Britons. Justice and equity in Nigeria demands that if any new states are to be created, these pre-independence provinces should be accorded statehood just as has been done for other provinces of the Arewa, Igbo, and Yoruba areas of
    the country.

In reviewing this ADC paper on State Creation, Senator Ibok Essien requested that it should be forwarded to Afe Annang for integration into a formal request for additional states in Akwa Ibom at the appropriate time. ADC commits to continue in the research and advocacy of sound public policy positions that will enhance the development, not only among our people, but Nigeria as a whole. It also commits to working with all known and functioning Annang Organizations to make the Annang World Congress Event a reality either in Abak, Ikot Ekpene, Lagos, Abuja, London or in Washington DC.

Dr. Victor Udo, President Chief, Sir Peter Umoh, Secretary General
