ABADA-Capoeira San Francisco's Marcia Treidler Celebrates 30 Years in Capoeira

San Francisco, CA (1888PressRelease) December 05, 2012 - ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco (ACSF), the Bay Area's first non-profit organization dedicated to recovering, preserving, and promoting Afro-Brazilian culture, will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its founder and artistic director, Márcia Treidler (aka Mestranda Cigarra), with a traditional Batizado and Graduation Ceremony on December 16 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at Dance Mission Theater, 3316 24th Street in San Francisco. The event will also feature the first visit to San Francisco in eight years by world-renowned capoeirista and ABADÁ-Capoeira founder Mestre Camisa, one of the largest capoeira organizations in the world.

One of the top ten capoeiristas out of over 41,000 international ABADÁ-Capoeira members, Mestranda Cigarra was the first female student of Mestre Camisa to be awarded the rank "Mestranda." She began studying capoeira in 1982, and five years later, she started teaching classes for street children, youth, and adults in Rio de Janeiro. In 1991, she moved to San Francisco and later founded ACSF in 1997.

Mestranda Cigarra's work reflects her commitment to the preservation and expansion of an art form of capoeira that has an invaluable impact on the San Francisco community's cultural standing. Mestranda Cigarra maintains international recognition for her accomplishments in the field and teaches regularly throughout Brazil, the North America, Israel, Asia, and Europe. Because capoeira was a male-dominated art form for over 300 years, Mestranda Cigarra's achievements have cleared the path for other women to excel.

This year's batizado is an opportunity for the public to witness the traditional aspects of capoeira, including the initiation of new students, as well view the diversity of skills from ACSF alumni of all levels, from experts to beginners. The ceremony includes visiting guest artists from Brazil, Spain, Mexico, Canada and other parts of the United States. In the week leading up to the batizado, Mestre Camisa will lead a workshop series.

"It's important for me to stay true to my roots and the roots of capoeira," said Treidler. "This year's batizado is not only a celebration of my journey in capoeira, but a passing on of a legacy. Mestre Camisa has taught me not only the martial art form of capoeira, but many invaluable lessons in life, and in turn I'd like to share these with the students of ABADÁ-Capoeira. My hope is to create a feeling of deep inspiration and appreciation of the connection over generations and the passing on of traditions, which is capoeira."
