Zinc Vs Apollo: Forum Fighting, It’s All The Rage!

The Adobe Apollo PR machine had begun to run for Apollo as they have been leaving all competition in their wake and of course they have succeeded, with one exception.

(1888PressRelease) May 16, 2007 - ‘It’s all getting rather interesting.’ Is how one web journalist put it to me the other day and I think that he’s right. According to the writings on the wall, or in this case the writings in the forums, the Adobe Apollo issue seems to be picking up a certain amount of momentum. The Adobe PR machine had begun to run for Apollo as they have been leaving all competition in their wake and of course they have succeeded, with one exception.

Multidmedia’s Zinc keeps popping into view, again and again when you peruse the web site forums on this particular topic, the writers keep coming back to the same question, “What effect will Apollo have on Zinc?” Seldom if ever is any other application mentioned in the same breath, it’s as though all others have disappeared without trace.

Look at any forum on the web that is running an Apollo topic and you will suddenly see Zinc homing into view. Some bright spark will ask the fabled question, others will rashly start making comparisons, (Apollo is still in its Alpha stage, may I remind you) rather than state the obvious differences between the too.

From what I, a mere mortal, understand Apollo has been designed as a vehicle for making Rich Internet Applications available on the users desktop.

Zinc, I believe has been developed specifically for creating Flash Applications for the Desktop and can be distributed via a download, CD-Rom, DVD, USB Device or even on a Kiosk.

It appears to the independent and dare I say it rational onlooker that forum users are acting like their name sakes of over a thousand years ago, they are baying for a fight between the Apollo and Zinc, the Lions and the Christians perhaps? The interesting point about all this is that there is no Emperor Nero to put his thumbs down, when the conflict is over. It is possibly a role that Adobe would covert for themselves, but in this case they cannot, and the reason is quite simple Zinc and Apollo are designed to do separate things.

Of course all this is rather futile, (as it was in those days too) but hey who am I to deny the crowds what they want? Nero fiddled whilst Rome burned, however one feels that unlike Nero, MDM Zinc will not be doing the same. Resting on their laurels? Not likely
