Being able to communicate effectively means a greater ability to build lasting relationships, according to Hertenstein. But what if you’re already divorced?
Tara Amaral and Chris Frie are the authors of Our Great Kids, a book designed for divorced parents who want to keep the lines of communication open with their kids and with their ex-spouses.
“Divorce is unfortunately extremely common,” says Ms. Amaral. “What really counts in these cases is if you can learn to communicate openly afterward, especially with your children. Both Chris and I are divorced so we know the challenges divorced parents face.”
Our Great Kids is dedicated to communication through tools designed for both parents and their kids. These tools are designed to do a few things, including:
• Provide an outlet for kids to express themselves
• Eliminate confusion about important dates and times
• Keep parents talking about their kids, even if it is through the book
• Allow parents to relive what they might have missed and share in the smiles and congratulations for their children’s accomplishments
“We know that the people who use our book may have had few opportunities to smile during the divorce process,” says Mr. Frie. “We want this book to provide some measure of support and help to people who need a hand.”
The authors have created the Web site www.OurGreatKids.com to go along with their new book. The site allows divorced parents to log into their child’s account to communicate important dates, daily activities and special things that their child did. Parents can also exchange photos and receive e-mail alerts to remind them of scheduled activities.
