January 13, 2007 - Kansas City, Missouri—With divorce rates over 50% child custody has become one of our nations biggest problems. Did you know there are 14 key behaviors that make the difference between parents who do well in custody disputes from those who do not?
Fathers and Mothers involved in child custody battles typically have little or no knowledge of what to expect.
Parents lose custody over false assumptions they are not equipped to refute. Fathers lose custody for being fathers. Mothers sometimes gain custody on the basis of their gender. If you don’t think gender bias is alive and well do a little research and see how many fathers have custody of their children. The percentage is less than 10%. Are 90% of the fathers in our country unfit or unworthy of being the custodial parent? Of course not. Are 90% of the fathers in our country uninterested in being full time dads?
Of course not. It was only as recent as the 1980’s that courts began to ignore gender when determining custody. In the past 25 years there has been progress but it is obvious we have a ways to go.
“I fought the courts bias and the court appointed facilitator’s bias during my custody battle by following a program outlined by Dr. Barry Bricklin and Dr. Gail Elliot, two experts in child custody” says Dave Huffman, a father with custody of his 3 children. “By following their advice I avoided several potential disastrous mistakes. The facilitator began her private interview with my children by asking them how they felt about their dad not paying his child support. It meant nothing to the female facilitator that the children had been living with me for some time and I had documented proof of money in excess of what the child support payments were spent providing for the children.“
Parent Alienation Syndrome is sometimes used by the parent who spends the most time with the children but in Dave’s case it was also used by the court appointed facilitator. When the facilitator’s report was submitted it contained numerous inaccurate statements and very little indication of what was actually going on in the family situation.
Despite having the cards stacked against him Dave was able to gain custody with the help of his attorney and the program outlined by Dr. Bricklin and Dr. Elliot.
