August 09, 2007 - Two Xlibris releases are reportedly on the short list for Yellow30 Sci-Fi’s Charon Award for science fiction novels published since 1999.
Yellow30 Sci-Fi, an independent online forum for science fiction and fantasy books, has just announced the four finalists for the Charon Award, which is an exclusive one-time recognition for the best book published in the science fiction, fantasy, or alternate history genre between 1999 and 2005. The final four is dominated by two Xlibris titles; The Oneprince by Bill Hand, and The Mushroom Circle by Clare C. Newbury. The winner will be announced on October 1, 2007 and both authors are quietly confident about their chances.
Other Xlibris titles considered for this one-time award included Queen of Jersia and The Elf King.
Meanwhile, the nominees for the inaugural Pluto Award have been whittled down to 11, which include Xlibris titles The Star Phoenix by David L. Brown, Child of Light by Diane Bentley Baker, Legend by Jude Hatcher Bangs, Bryre's Jewels by Joan How, and Adara and the Pirates by Jerry Williston.
The organizers conceived the name “Pluto Awards” in a moment of inspiration. According to staff members at Yellow30, they thought of the name after the IAU decided to reclassify Pluto as a dwarf planet after seventy-six years of being classified as a planet. The uproar over the reclassification put Pluto in the news for months. The staff thought the irony in the whole thing was much like the publishing industry. Small presses are regarded by the major trade industry as “dwarf publishers” and relegate any author from them as outside the sphere of the big names at the “big guy” publishing houses. Therefore the staff thought it appropriate to name the award after the planet - Pluto.
Three finalists for the inaugural Pluto Award will be announced on September 1, 2007, and the winner will be crowned On November 1, 2007.
