Writer’s Novel Explores Life Under Communist Rule During World War II

"Far East Of The Sun" is a remarkable love story inspired by the deep and enduring love of her parents, their passionate belief in the dignity of all people, and their remarkable courage that sustained them throughout their tumultuous lives.

Boston, MA-NH (1888PressRelease) June 14, 2008 - Sturbridge - Sturbridge-based publisher, The Reed Edwards Company, announces the release of its latest novel, "Far East Of The Sun," by Janina Stankiewicz Chung. Many area residents may remember Ms. Chung from her years as hostess at the Oxhead Tavern located at the Sturbridge Host Hotel complex at 366 Main Street in Sturbridge. And on Sunday, June 22, Ms. Chung will be back at the Oxhead Tavern for a book signing. The event begins at 4:00 p.m.

It was during her years at the Oxhead Tavern that Ms. Chung explored writing a novel based on her family’s experiences living under Communist oppression in Russia during World War II. While sharing her story with Bill Lemke, a regular patron at the Oxhead, Chung commented that she had never written a story before and that English was not her first language. A short time later, Lemke introduced Chung to Sturbridge author/editor Rita Schiano whom he thought could help her through the process. Schiano, author of "Painting The Invisible Man" and "Sweet Bitter Love," began working with Ms. Chung in the capacity of editor. Four years later, Schiano founded the Reed Edwards Company and signed Chung to a publishing contract.

“Janina lived the first thirteen years of her life under Communist oppression in Russia, forced relocation to Nazi concentrations camps, and post-war life in various displaced persons camps,” said Schiano. “After living in eleven refugee camps over the course of several years, a family friend sponsored their immigration to the United States.”
The family came to the US in 1951 and settled in the Chicopee area, where Chung still lives today.

“Far East Of The Sun is a remarkable love story inspired by the deep and enduring love of her parents, their passionate belief in the dignity of all people, and their remarkable courage that sustained them throughout their tumultuous lives,” said Schiano. “The story is a powerful moral saga, as well as living proof of the power of unconditional love.”

"Far East Of The Sun" by Janina Stankiewicz Chung is now available through The Reed Edwards Company, the book publisher’s web site, http://www.reededwards.com. Price: $15.95. On June 22, both Janina Chung and Rita Schiano will be at the Oxhead Tavern beginning at 4:00 p.m. to sign copies of their respective books. The Oxhead Tavern book signing is a cash-only event.
