June 03, 2009 - Upgrades at WisdomCommons.org make it easier than ever for parents and teachers to talk with kids about virtues and ethics. The site’s growing interactive library is organized around a set of 100 character virtues such as compassion, generosity, and courage.
The not-for-profit Common Wisdom Project seeks to “elevate and celebrate” humanity’s shared moral or ethical core by showcasing inspiring quotations, poetry and stories from many cultures. Content comes from secular and religious wisdom traditions and civic leaders.
“Traditionally, conversations about character and virtue happen in religious settings or among philosophers. We create tools that let users carry these conversations into a broader range of activities – work, home, the arts, and civic life,” says founder and psychologist, Dr. Valerie Tarico.
“As parents, we want our children to be happy. We want them to achieve great things. But we also want them to be good people. We want to be as proud of their kindness, generosity and integrity as we are of their achievements. How do we help them get there?”
Inspiring quotes, poetry, and stories are tried and true motivators. They remind us all of who we want to be and how we want to live.
