April 13, 2007 - The movie “The Secret” has captured the attention of millions, promising the key to creating wealth, happiness and joy. Yet as people try to apply the concepts presented in the movie, they are getting mixed results. Why?
Is “The Secret” a hoax? No… but it doesn’t tell the whole story.
“The Secret” highlights the Law of Attraction, the universal mechanism of manifesting. But according to Sheri Menelli and Jennifer McVey, founders of The Manifesting Institute in Southern California, the movie fails to discuss the factors that get in our way when we try to manifest what we want in life.
As clinical hypnotherapists, they have both witnessed the struggles of clients who embraced the law of attraction but were unable to manifest their desired results. One reason, McVey notes, is the unconscious beliefs and mental blocks that neutralize a person’s ability to attract what they focus on. For example, one of their clients could only attract things that she didn’t want. When they investigated this, they discovered an underlying belief that happiness inevitably leads to disappointment. Once that belief was identified and adjusted, happiness became safe and she attracted different experiences.
Hugh Harmon, Ph.D., Metaphysical Teacher, Psychologist and Founder of Foundation for Research & Exploration of Mind Motivation points out the problem with the ‘Ask, Believe, Receive” formula given in “The Secret” is belief is affected by more than one level of thought. Discovery of what is in all levels of one’s mind is the true secret to manifestation according to Dr. Harmon.
Pamela Chilton, C.Ht., Spiritualist and author of “Odyssey of the Soul, A Spiritual Trilogy” warns: “Like all great truths there is more to ‘The Secret” than what appears on the surface. Understanding the true principles of mind and spirit helps to motivate rather than frustrate when working with the laws of attraction.”
Another reason people struggle to manifest what they want, adds Menelli, is the influence of one’s life purpose and life lessons. If the desired experience conflicts with a person’s spirit or path, that desire remains a dream.
