April 18, 2006 - The Empire State Baseball Tournament Series seems to have figured out a way to put that story to rest. Once and for all! They say bring together the 8 Top 18U teams from the North and the 8 Top 18U teams from the South! August 10, 2006 to August 13, 2006. Then bring the 8 Top 18U teams from the East and the 8 Top 18U teams from the West! August 14, 2006 to August 17, 2006.
These teams will play 8 Games in 4 days. There will be two divisions of 8 teams each. Each team will play each team in their own division once. Then the Team with the best record in each division will play each other. The winner of that game will advance to the "All America 18U Baseball Championship". The best team from the North vs. South Tournament will play the best team from the East vs. West Tournament in a Best 2 out of 3 Championship Series! August 18 - 20, 2006.
Who will take home the GOLDEN BAT? The Golden Bat is awarded to the BEST 18U Baseball Team in the Country. The winner of the "All America 18U Baseball Championship"
Will this concept take hold? Only time will tell as it seems to this reporter that it seems like a viable way to crown a real champion at any age group. In fact the Tournament director insisted that after they see how this first tournament goes with the older boys then the other ages will follow.
"The beauty of having the older boys also makes this venue a ‘must stop’ for college recruiters and pro scouts who want to take a look at some of the best players in the country. What better way to evaluate a posiible talent then by watching the boys play in games." says Nick Colavito, the tournament director and founder of Empire State Baseball Tournament Series. "I will send out mailings to all NCAA schools and the Professional Teams", Colavito reitterated. The three Tournament venues are all within an hour distance of Cooperstown as well, so when not playing, teams and parents can vist the Baseball Hall of Fame and all else that Cooperstown has to offer. The Capital District of New York; Albany, Saratoga and Schenectady Counties also have a lot to offer visitors who take advantage of this great event.
Colavito also states that he would like to see this branch out to other sports as well. "There is a great interest in other sports like Soccer, Lacrosse, and Basketball for both girls and boys in this area. I would like to see the Upstate NY area become the Sports Recruiting Capital of the Country", says Colavito. "There is a lot of talent in the Northeast but by bringing the best Teams from all over the country to Albany each year we really get to see the Best of the Best"
Well that remains to be seen and perhaps we will check back with Mr. Colavito in September and see how everything worked out.
