West Clare Contractor Awarded EUR2.2m Contract To Develop 17-acre Public Park In Limerick

Castletroy, County Limerick, 21st November 2007 – The development of a major new public park and amenity area at Castletroy in County Limerick will commence in early December, according to Limerick County Council.

(1888PressRelease) November 22, 2007 - The announcement follows the signing of a EUR2.2m contract between the Local Authority and contractor L&M Keating of Kilmihil, County Clare. The development of the 17-acre park, designed by Nicholas de Jong Associates of Urban Design in Limerick, follows an extensive public consultation with the Castletroy community and local school children. It is anticipated that construction work on the project will be completed by the middle of next year.

'Castletroy Park' will feature a fully equipped children's playground, a skateboarding area, 1.2 km of pedestrian pathways, a circular cycle route, and a central performance/exhibition area with covering structure. The development will also feature an array of natural habitats, including a 4,300 sq. metre lake, wetlands, wildflower grass areas and woodlands.

The development, which will be located opposite Castletroy College, will be complemented by park furniture, ornamental planting areas, a public car park and main entrance feature.

Cllr. Kevin Sheahan, Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council described the new park and amenity area as a significant and welcome addition to Limerick's outdoor recreational infrastructure.

"I am very impressed with the proposed development, which I hope will become a focal point for the people of the locality and beyond. I am sure that, once completed, it will be a beautiful, accessible and convenient setting for relaxation and recreation", he stated.

Cllr. Sheahan continued, "The provision of this state of the art public park demonstrates the commitment of Limerick County Council to help improve the quality of life for local communities. The development will be of particular benefit to the growing population of Castletroy and surrounding areas."

Mr. Edmond Gleeson, Limerick County Manager said the provision of sporting and recreational facilities and services is one of the core functions of Local Government.

"Castletroy continues to experience growth in terms of developments and population. Therefore, it is imperative that this is matched by the provision of important infrastructure such as recreational amenities. I expect that the new development will be completed within six months of construction works commencing", added Mr. Gleeson.

Pat Quinlivan, Commercial Director, L & M Keating Ltd explained, “This is a prestigious contract for the company as it is one of the largest purpose built public park and amenity areas in County Limerick. The challenge to complete the park to the highest standard within six months is one that we are looking forward to.”

L & M Keating Ltd, with an annual turnover of EUR40m, currently employs 105 permanent staff and is best known for constructing the 5-star Lodge and Clubhouse at Doonbeg Golf Club. The company, which recently won a national award for its refurbishment of St. Senan's Church in Kilrush, was also involved in the construction of the newly opened University of Limerick Living Bridge across the River Shannon.

The West Clare-based firm, is currently constructing the breakwaters for a new marina at Knightstown Harbour in County Kerry, harbour developments on Inis Boffin, car parking facilities at Milford Care Centre, and a mixed development at Quay Mills in Kilrush comprising apartments and office.
