April 18, 2008 - For most of us, our own mortality is a deeply personal subject that we would rather avoid talking about. The recent film The Bucket List confronts this discomfort head-on, with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman starring as two terminally-ill men who head off on a road trip with nothing but a list of to-dos before they die. Films like this can leave us asking ourselves those difficult questions: Have I done all the things I’ve wanted to do in life? Do I really want to know when I’m going to kick the bucket?
In a recent survey completed by SQM, 4000 North American adults were asked the question, "Would you want to know the exact date that you were going to die?"
Sixty-five percent of those surveyed did not want to know when they were going to die. The majority indicated that their reasoning was because it would take the mystery out of living. Others feared the constant sound of a ticking clock, counting down the hours until their demise.
As for the 35 percent of people who did want to know when they were going to die, their rationale is that it would allow them to plan out their lives more easily and be able to make peace with friends, family, and themselves before they ultimately kicked the bucket.
But regardless of which group you belong to—whether you want to know when you are going to kick the bucket or not—you’ll always find your days are sweeter if you don’t lose sight of the old saying, "Today is the first day of the rest of your life."
