Walter Carney, Head of Oncogene Sciences at Siemens to Present at GTCbio’s 2nd Rediscovering Biomarkers Conference on July 10-11, 2008 in Boston, MA

(1888PressRelease) April 19, 2008 - Dr. Walter Carney, Head of Oncogene Sciences at Siemens will be presenting at GTCbio’s 2nd Annual Rediscovering Biomarkers Conference on July 10-11, 2008 in Boston, MA. Dr. Carney will speak on circulating oncoproteins as novel biomarkers for oncology.

Pharmaceutical companies have developed targeted therapies such as trastuzumab and lapatinib for HER-2/neu positive tumors while others have developed anti-EGFR therapies such as tarceva and erbitux for EGFR positive tumors. This presentation will cover clinical research studies performed with tests specific for the circulating oncoproteins, HER-2/neu, EGFR and CAIX. These circulating biomarkers have the potential to be used in conjunction with the specific targeted therapies for patient selection, patient monitoring and patient management.

The major challenge ahead, with the variety of new therapeutic options, will be to select the appropriate therapy or combinations of therapies for each patient. Specific biomarker tests either alone or in combinations will be needed at the appropriate time in the course of disease to ensure that patients receive the right drug at the right time. These tests may also be valuable for monitoring the efficacy of the targeted therapies. A circulating biomarker such as serum HER-2/neu may be able to specifically identify patients with progressing HER-2/neu positive disease and provide the information needed by physicians to choose from the variety of HER-2/neu targeted therapies available to cancer patients.

The 2nd Annual Rediscovering Biomarkers Conference will exposes attendees to the latest advancements and developments in biomarkers and predictive medicine. Attendees will gain insight into discovery and development processes, hear about new biomarkers and upcoming trends in the industry, as well as the status of those in clinical trials. Delegates will also receive highly valuable information on tools for improving reimbursement strategies and the efficacy and validation of biomarkers.
