November 15, 2007 - Norcross, GA -– WaDt Candidate Tona Byrd of The Dream Team Services Inc. wins her first six figure contract valued at $140,000.00 after graduating in June from Women Are Dreamers Too-The Non-Profit Business Technical Initiative aiding victims of Domestic violence. At the time of this Press Release she was awarded another contract valued at $100,000.00, hence a total of $240,000.00 contract after graduating last June from WaDt
Tona Byrd who won her first six figure contract says she is grateful to be a part of this wonderful program. A program she says has opened her eyes and given her the much needed business acumen to become a successful business owner.
A study of domestic violence survivors found that 74% of employed battered women were harassed by their partner while they were at work.
The annual cost of lost productivity due to domestic violence is estimated as $727.8 million, with over 7.9 million paid workdays lost each year.
The costs of intimate partner violence exceeds $5.8 billion each year, $4.1 billion of which is for direct medical and mental health care services, much of which is paid for by the employer.
"While I was being abused, I often came into work exhausted, was frequently late to my job and stayed at home for days at a time when I had bruises to hide. So-called 'domestic abuse' isn't just domestic. It takes its toll on employees and companies alike, hence loss in productivity"- WaDt candidate
“The quest then is to find a medium where domestic violence survivors can become productive, (while at the same time we recognize the issues and deal with them on all fronts both through counseling and all else that we must do to raise the survivors self-esteem), they too can contribute economically and contribute to our communities by becoming employers or at best running profitable businesses.”- Williams, WaDt Executive Director
The program which relies heavily on Corporate Sponsorships and the generosity of Verizon Wireless is a tuition-free, twelve –week business training class.
We need a bigger classroom, so we are imploring the wonderful folks in our community to find it in their hearts to accord us a nice space to be able to do what we do. Taking care of the needs of these wonderful folks- abused victims and their children.
We need a space to house our own food supplies, used clothing and a children’s library.
Tona Byrd is demonstrating once again that we all can contribute, no matter what life has dealt we all can pickup the pieces the day after and become a success story.
Class is currently in session now, the next graduation is scheduled for December 28th, 2007.
