The BMI (Body Mass Index) is what determines our weight status and is what physicians use as a guideline when evaluating their patients. Normal BMI is considered to be between 19 to 24.9, with overweight being between 25-30, and obese is anything above 30. The Journal of the American Medical Association did a study over a year’s time and determined that out of 12,835 overweight patients, only 42% were referred to any type of weight management program. This is disturbing because of the risk of diseases and complications that come from being overweight.
High blood pressure, Triglycerides, cholesterol and resistance to insulin are all risks for cardio vascular disease (CVD) and can lead to other complications. Other diseases and health conditions include diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, sleep apnea and it can even lead to some cancers such as breast, colon and endometrial. All of these diseases are worrisome and are costing Americans approximately $120 billion dollars a year. Many people and companies are trying to do their part to help consumers make good decisions about their health and what they eat.
Kraft is dedicated to making healthier snacks and fast food chains are trying to offer more low calorie, low fat selections on their menus. Companies are looking at health management programs and doing monthly newsletters to educate their employees and help them live a healthier lifestyle. Communities even recognize the importance of exercise and are trying to incorporate more walking trails and after school programs for children. It is going to take an effort from everyone to help solve this health crisis that is spiraling out of control.
Once the body becomes inactive, our belly fat slowly starts to take hold and results in increased weight gain. The American Journal of Medicine reported in their March 19th Edition that men who ate fatty meals after periods of decreased activity, tested with higher levels of triglycerides compared to when they were active. Other research has shown that exercise reduces body fat, which has been linked to diabetes and heart disease, with the CDC recommending at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day.
Now, the Federal Government is jumping on board making exercise recommendations for people of all ages and introduced a bill into Congress last month. These recommendations would be incorporated into existing nutritional guidelines, be more specific and have a bigger focus on educating people. Many lawmakers are supporting this effort and admit to integrating exercise into their own daily routine, such as taking the stairs or walking instead of using the subway. Although not everyone is on board with this new way of thinking, they are hopeful that it will be forthcoming in the near future.
Some types of activity that are being recommended are brisk walking, swimming or outdoor activities and sports. The Government is already involved in promoting fruit and vegetable consumption with the focus on school lunches. This bill would provide recommendations for people of all ages who are trying to stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
