  • (1888PressRelease) October 21, 2014 - VIRTUALDIVE is keen to meet potential investors as part of its strategy for international growth.

VIRTUALDIVE has created the Ocean Connected project, which is an application that allows internet users to discover and explore ocean depths, in real-time, from their home computers, tablets or smart phones. The main objective of this global project is to overcome unawareness amongst the general public about the ocean and the vital role that it plays in the survival of life on earth.

With new technologies linked to underwater robotics, virtual diving eliminates actual aquatic immersion, which is the main obstacle to traditional diving in terms of both risk and cost. Rather than being individual and secluded, virtual diving remains constantly connected with the external world and information sources. The project also adds value and offers new growth perspective to diving centres and the industry as a whole, which has been slow to adapt to a more digital environment.

The Ocean Connected application is a technological breakthrough in the industry. The system links a connected and submersible mobile device, named Dolphyn, with a multisided web platform and dedicated applications, allowing two global networks to interact and generate revenue. On one side there are the underwater content producers (divers, snorkellers, yacht owners, marine reserves, etc.) and on the other are the content consumers (Internet users).

For a minimal cost, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, any internet user will have the opportunity to follow a qualified diving instructor and interactively discover and study - through links to their social network - the hidden wonders of ocean. Currently, traditional diving activities are undertaken by just 0.4% of the population but, thanks to Ocean Connected, these activities now have the opportunity to attract the interest and attention of 2.5 billion internet users around the world.

For the first time, a viable alternative is available to the millions of people that will never practice scuba diving but that are interested in the direct observation and knowledge of the subsea environment. This digital alternative combines virtual and augmented realities, geo caching, live video streaming, gaming, eLearning, cloud computing, and networking, to enrich the video images collected by professional divers and open up access to thousands of diving sites, coral reefs, marine reserves and historical wrecks.

VIRTUALDIVE successfully completed a six year R&D programme, which was financed by the Agence Nationale de Recherche (French National Research Agency), regional institutions and the European Commission (FP7262160). The proof of concept (POC) was approved and pre-serial industrial production was launched, leading to the first sales of the product. Usage will be closely monitored in order to gather information and feedback from customers and users.

The company, which is a family owned SME, will be exhibiting at the Dublin Web Summit 2014 and is looking to meet external investors. Fresh funds are required to enter the global market, supported by a strong digital marketing campaign and a consistent strategy for industrialisation. For the first round of funding, the company is looking for between €1.5 and €2 million over the course of 2015.

These funds will be used to hire a team of executives that will manage the company during its development phase; to cover the marketing launch; to acquire the industrial technology systems; and to proceed with technical and technological improvements in line with market demand. The withdrawal of the first external investors is expected by 2020, with an investment multiplier of 10.
