October 30, 2007 - Venture capital investment in the US hit $8.07 billion in the third quarter of 2007, the latest quarterly venture capital report released by Dow Jones VentureOne and Ernst & Young LLP shows.
This constitutes an eight per cent rise on the equivalent figures for 2006, and is the ninth consecutive quarter of year-on-year growth in dollars invested.
It is also the highest quarterly investment total since the first quarter of 2001.
The latest quarterly rise is largely due to an increase in the number of larger size deals, as the overall quantity of transactions has actually fallen.
"The third quarter reinforced that there are innovative and exciting private companies across the industries in which VCs invest," commented Joseph Muscat, the Americas director of the Ernst & Young Venture Capital Advisory Group.
"Fuelling this innovation are the larger deal sizes seen this quarter. The overall level of investment and larger deal sizes are suggestive of a continued bullish view of these companies' prospects and liquidity options."
In all, 635 deals were completed during the quarter, down by 41 deals from the third quarter of 2006.
