  • (1888PressRelease) May 27, 2016 - BROOKLYN, NEW YORK - During a solemn ceremony at Brooklyn Borough Hall on Wednesday, Victor Mooney, presented The Holocaust Remembrance Tube to Borough President Eric Adams. Mr. Mooney carried a special tube aboard his rowboat, the Spirit of Malabo, to honor the six million Jews who were persecuted and murdered. Dr. Alexander Lupenko, of Passport Health attended the ceremony.

Mr. Mooney departed Las Palmas, Canary Islands, off the coast of West Africa on February 19, 2014 and arrived at the Brooklyn Bridge on November 28, 2015, twenty-one months later.

Mr. Mooney faces countless challenges during his feat. He lost as eighty pounds, shark attack, pirated in Haitian waters, rescued by US Coast Guard in North Carolina.

Mr. Mooney failed three times at this feat in a ten year period, which nearly took his life. In 2006, his homemade boat sprung a leak and sunk off the coast of Senegal. He tried again in 2009 in a better boat. This time, his water desalinator machine failed and he was rescued. In 2011, Mr. Mooney's boat was damaged aboard a cargo ship en-route to Africa. The boat would eventually take on water and left Mr. Mooney drifting in a life raft for fourteen days. He was rescued by a dry bulk container and transported to Brazil.

The tube on Mr. Mooney's boat, christened The Spirit of Malabo, was donated by Long Island based Fleisher Tubes. The Holocaust Remembrance tube has been cut into smaller pieces. They will be distributed to Holocaust Survivors, those that are relentless in educating the public to never forget and as an educational tool to prevent anti-Semitism.

"Only if I survived and made it to the Brooklyn Bridge could I tell my story", added Mr. Mooney.

His pursuit was to encourage HIV testing, after losing one brother to AIDS.
