September 24, 2007 - (San Francisco, CA) - Stacey Frost, founder of San Francisco-based Urban Re:Vision (www.urbanrevision.com) has announced the winners from the second phase of a unique, five-part international competition to create the National prototype of sustainable urban living.
Aptly titled Re:Route, the phase focused on the need for more effective and environmentally friendly urban transportation. Innovative proposals from throughout the world were judged by an esteemed panel of industry experts with the winning designs now under consideration for incorporation into the large-scale project to turn an entire major-city block into a living example of the benefits of sustainability.
“As it was with the first stage of the competition Re:Volt, we were overwhelmed by not only the number of entries we received but by the consistently high quality and innovative ideas that were submitted,” says Frost who along with Re:Vision Board Principal Eric Corey Freed, founder of OgranicArchitect, oversaw the jury process. “While the proposals received from the industry professionals were exceptional, we are continually impressed with the forward-thinking of concerned citizens anxious to make a difference.”
The three top designs as chosen by the jury, with each winner receiving a $2,000 award are:
SNIFF by Abhishek Bali
A wireless system called SNIFF is would be installed in the components (vehicles) of the public transit systems (trains/buses/trams], both for short and long-route services. With a range close to 100 meters, SNIFF would enable passengers to connect to their co-passengers with similar inclinations, backgrounds, personal or professional attributes using their wireless-enabled notebooks, cell phones and PDAs.
PODLife by Kaytea Petro and Adam Cornelius
Focusing on minimizing driving and traffic congestion as a result of urban planning models, while encouraging efficient public transportation, walking, and biking in areas dense with a mix of commercial and residential spaces. Structuring this infrastructure around urban pods that are healthy, safe and will facilitate a sense of community for its residents.
INTELLIGENTLY INTEGRATED TRANSPORT by Julie Ulrich, Alec Gosse, Javier Del Castillo and Bob Batz
Intelligently Integrated Transport (IIT) is a systems approach to meeting community transportation needs for medium-large-sized cities. ITT requires only modest investments in infrastructure, but is a fundamental redesign and reorganization of systems resources.
Along with Ms. Frost and Mr. Freed, the jury for Re:Route was made up of leading industry experts including electric car pioneer Ron Gremban, who currently heads conversion and component evaluation projects on behalf of Cal-Cars, Vicki Vlachakis, General Motors Design Manager responsible for the 2006 Pontiac Solstice and 2007 Saturn Sky and Marc Franke, author and Vice-President of the Iowa Renewable Energy Association who is currently penning his second book titled “Go… Without Oil.”
In addition to the completed Re:Volt and Re:Route stages of the competition, future categories include the recently launched Re:Store, which focuses on providing green innovations for a healthy economy and Re:Connect, which will create an urban planning model for people and place.
Upon the completion of the conceptual competitions, one mayor will be awarded the opportunity to turn innovation into action with the revitalization of an entire block in their city. The fifth and final competition, titled Re:Vision will then gather site-specific proposals from around the world with leading architects drawing from the unique system approaches and the invention and adaptations of existing technologies provided by the competitions winners to create their design presentations.
