Ups Among Top 50 Globally For Carbon Disclosure

UPS (NYSE:UPS) has just been named one of the Top 50 corporations globally for its commitment to transparency and the manner in which it tracks and discloses its impact on the environment.

(1888PressRelease) October 13, 2009 - ATLANTA – UPS (NYSE:UPS) has just been named one of the Top 50 corporations globally for its commitment to transparency and the manner in which it tracks and discloses its impact on the environment.

The Carbon Disclosure Project, which annually surveys the carbon disclosure practices of companies on the FTSE Global 500 Index, elevated UPS in 2009 to its “Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index” of the Top 50 companies around the world.

Separately, UPS was named to the “Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index” (CDLI) of leaders among companies listed on the S&P 500 Index. UPS is the only company in its industry to make either list. According to the Carbon Disclosure Project, companies on the leadership indexes display “the most
professional approach to corporate governance in respect to climate change practices.”

“This credential is a direct reflection of our recent actions to be transparent and quantitative about our environmental performance,” said Bob Stoffel, UPS senior vice president of Supply Chain, Strategy, Engineering and Sustainability. “Our most recent sustainability report, for the first time, records both global direct and indirect carbon emissions. This information is critical for our customers, who are seeking to understand their own environmental impact across their supply chains. Complete disclosure is essential to that mission.”

The CDLI provides an evaluation tool for institutional investors and selects companies based on their responses to questions regarding greenhouse gas emissions, emissions reduction targets and risks and opportunities associated with climate change. The index is compiled by PricewaterhouseCoopers on behalf of the Carbon Disclosure Project, which gathers information on behalf of 475 institutional investors with US$55 trillion in assets.

“Companies that control their risks today, manage their emissions and seize the opportunities to produce low carbon goods and services, will be the best placed to prosper in a low carbon economy of the future,” commented Paul Dickinson, chief executive of the Carbon Disclosure Project.
